then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and
the heavenly bodies will be burned up and
dissolved, and the earth and the works that are
done on it will be exposed» (2 Peter 3:10; ESV 2025)
«Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, for the
day of the Lord is coming; it is near ... For the day
of the Lord is great and very awesome; who can
endure it?» (Joel 2:1, 11; ESV 2025)
In the biblical prophetic books, the phrase «the Day of the Lord» (ancient Hebrew Yom Yahweh – יוֹם יְהוָה [Ref. 3]), as well as, in certain contexts, the closely related expression «that day» refers to a special time of God’s intervention, when the Creator of the universe “intervenes in human history for judgment and salvation” [Ref. 1; 2–4]. In prophetic texts, unlike ordinary indications of time, this expression takes on a clear theological and eschatological meaning.
«Then my anger will be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them (turn away) and hide my face from them, and they will be devoured (destroyed). And many evils and troubles will come upon them ...»
(Deuteronomy 31:17).
Thus, already in the early biblical texts, the expression «that day» is associated with a time when God turns away from the wicked and carries out His judgment upon them. In the prophetic books, this theme takes on a much broader scope and gradually becomes associated with the great and awesome «Day of the Lord.»
This is one of the tragic aspects of this Day. Although the trials will encompass all the inhabitants of the earth like a trap (Luke 21:35, "like a net", Ohiienko translation), the wicked themselves will end up in the place where «there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth» (Matthew 13:50).
1. Yom Yahweh
According to ancient Israelite beliefs, the present age will be replaced by the Coming Age, which will begin with the moment of "punishment and retribution for sinners” [Ref. 6, p. 451]. The biblical prophets associate this time of judgment with destructive power and devastation from the Almighty:
«Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger (“Behold, the terrible day of the Lord is coming; it will be dreadful,”** translation [Ref. 18]), to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it»** (Isaiah 13:9; compare with Joel 1:15).
«Behold, the day of the LORD comes, cruel, with wrath and fierce anger ("See, the terrible day of the Lord is coming; it will be dreadful,” translation [Ref. 18]), to make the land a desolation and to destroy its sinners from it» (Isaiah 13:9; compare with Joel 1:15).
Thus, in many ancient Hebrew eschatological concepts, human history was divided into two ages: "the present age – absolutely and irreparably evil, and the age to come – the Golden Age of God. And between them – the Day of the Lord – terrible and dreadful ... the world will be shattered to pieces and another world will be born” [Ref. 7].
The main features of the extraordinary Yom Yahweh, referred to in the Targum of the Prophets as "the Day that is appointed to come from the Lord,” can be reduced to three main characteristics [Ref. 7]:
- “it will come suddenly and unexpectedly”;
- “it will be associated with cosmic catastrophes, in the course of which the universe will be destroyed to its very foundations”;
- “it will be a time of judgment”.
Undoubtedly, this will be "a special time of God’s judgment on a global scale, when judgment will be poured out not only upon one person, one nation, or some limited territory, but at once upon many (or even all) the nations of the earth” [Ref. 25, p. 192].
That is why, in the canonical corpus of the Prophets (Nevi’im), the awesome Yom Yahweh is described as a period of calamity, distress, destruction, desolation, anger, wrath, vengeance, and darkness. It is a tragic time for the inhabitants of the whole earth (Luke 21:35), and it should not be understood literally as a single 24-hour day (Isaiah 34:8).
In the New Testament, the theme of the Day of the Lord is also associated with such eschatological expressions as «the great tribulation,» «the day of judgment,» «the great day of his wrath,» «that day,» and so forth. They describe different aspects of that great historical event when God’s future judgment reaches its culmination, when the present order of things comes to an end.
However, the content of this New Testament understanding is not limited to the punishment of the wicked generation (Matthew 13:39–42; 24:14; Luke 17:26–30; 2 Peter 3:6–7). The Day of the Lord is also associated with the most important event – the return of the Savior and the establishment of His Kingdom on earth (Matthew 16:28; 24:26–30; Revelation 1:7–8; 11:15; James 5:8).
Thus, in the narrow eschatological sense, Yom Yahweh is a time of unprecedented divine judgments and natural upheavals (lasting several months according to the author’s reconstruction), which reaches its culmination in the final period of human history. It is part of the difficult years of the Great Tribulation, filled with physical and emotional suffering, and does not last only a single 24-hour day, as some researchers suggest [Ref. 25, p. 193].
In the broader context of biblical concepts held among Christian theologians, the Day of the Lord denotes a much longer period – from the beginning of the Church Age to the end of the Messiah’s Millennial Kingdom on earth. In this broad sense, the term does not denote a calendar date or even a single event, but rather an extended period of God’s intervention in human history.
«Christ ... will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him» (Hebrews 9:28; "who are waiting for Him for salvation,” CUV'23). «He will come and save you» (Isaiah 35:4).
For this reason, the apostle Paul uses the concept of the «Day of the Lord”» both in the sense of judgment commonly understood among the Jews (1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Thessalonians 2:2; 1 Corinthians 5:5) and directly associates it with the person of the Savior – «in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ» (1 Corinthians 1:8; 2 Corinthians 1:14; Philippians 1:10; 2:16).
Thus, the Day of the Lord in the biblical sense is not merely a day of punishment for the wicked. It is an extraordinary time of God’s intervention that will bring judgment and salvation to humanity, bring the present order of things to an end, and open the way for the establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth. A logical question arises: what exactly will this extraordinary time bring for all humanity?
2. Will the Day Come at Night?
"It is striking that the Greek original says: ‘The heavens and the earth are keeping (gathering, accumulating) fire for the day of judgment’”. If this image is understood literally, then tongues of flame that are "accumulating" both above and below will appear before Christ’s return (Luke 17:28–30).
The careless inhabitants do not keep watch over their Home, and therefore Yom Yahweh will enter it like a thief at night, according to the mysterious prophecy. «But the day of the Lord will come like a thief [at night], and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done ("will be burned up," CUV'23) on it will be exposed» (2 Peter 3:10).

"Whether atomic or thermonuclear, this fire will find abundant fuel in the form of uranium and other fissionable materials...” [Ref. 19, p. 849].
However, according to the author’s understanding in this article, the catastrophe foretold by the apostle is of a natural-cosmic nature and comes directly from God, as He Himself declares through the prophet Zephaniah:
«Therefore wait for me," declares the Lord, "for the day when I rise up to seize the prey (for devastation). For my decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them my indignation, all my burning anger (wrath); for in the fire of my jealousy all the earth shall be consumed (devoured)» (Zephaniah 3:8, "In the flame of my jealousy all will burn,” translation [Ref. 22]).
The punishment will come from the Almighty (Habakkuk 3:5–12) on the day appointed by Him (2 Peter 3:10), when He will judge a world burdened by lawlessness. At the same time, the prophecies show that God’s judgment may be carried out through global natural disasters (2 Peter 3:6–7) and great destruction (Jeremiah 4:6–29). That is why the biblical warning about this day is also a call to vigilance. Blessed is the person who remains watchful and prepares for the coming of these tragic events.
During the time of judgment, "God uses natural means to accomplish His will” [Ref. 21, p. 658] – «heaven and earth, the
sea» (Revelation 14:7; 8:5–12). Among these instruments will also be the stone not cut by human hands (Daniel 2:31–35), which will fall unexpectedly, like a downpour during harvest (1 Samuel 12:16–18). The apostle Paul also warns of the sudden destruction of people during a period of supposed peace (1 Thessalonians 5:3).
The prophet Isaiah also foresees unprecedented natural and cosmic disasters: «Therefore I will make the heavens tremble ("I will shake the heavens," Synodal translation; "My wrath will shake the heavens," translation [Ref. 18]), and the earth will be shaken (moved) out of its place at the wrath (fury) of the LORD of hosts on the day of his burning (fiery) anger» (Isaiah 13:13).
From the perspective of the natural sciences and astrophysics, the shaking of the heavens and the earth (verse 13) can be compared with the consequences of a colossal cosmic impact. Even during the passage of a massive asteroid through the dense layers of the atmosphere, a powerful acoustic shock wave will arise, while the observable atmospheric and optical phenomena may resemble what the prophet described as «the heavens tremble».
The direct impact of such an object, however, will cause powerful seismic disturbances and the propagation of Rayleigh and Love surface waves. This will trigger the phenomenon of global liquefaction of water-saturated soils and lead to the collapse of engineered structures and tectonic displacements of mountain masses.
The redistribution of enormous masses of matter will alter the planet’s moment-of-inertia tensor [Ref. 12], affecting its rotational parameters. In modern terms, this may correspond to the prophetic image – the earth will tremble and «be shaken (moved) out of its place» (Isaiah 13:13).
3. The Enigmatic Sign
Likewise, in the future, the coming of Yom Yahweh will be announced by an extraordinary astronomical sign foretold by Jesus Christ. «Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man» (Matthew 24:30a).
The sign will be observable from a vast part of the earth’s surface, reaching people in different countries and regions, because «all the tribes of the earth will mourn» (verse 30b, ("will weep, ‘will wail in despair," translation [Ref. 22]).
If the words «all the tribes of the earth» are understood literally, then this unique sign, universal in its scale, will be seen by anyone who looks up at the night sky, which shines from one end to the other (Luke 21:28; 17:24). Since this Day will come «at night» (2 Peter 3:10; CUV'23, Ohiienko, and Synodal translations).
In the author’s interpretation, this sign will be the radiant – the optical center of a meteor shower [Ref. 10], caused by the mass entry of numerous meteor bodies into the dense layers of the atmosphere, which in the Bible are metaphorically called «stars» (Matthew 24:29; Revelation 6:13; Isaiah 34:4).
This astronomical phenomenon is clearly observable on a cloudless night, since the apparent region of origin, as the perspective point of convergence of meteor tracks, cannot be seen in daylight. The glow produced by these luminous streaks will be so intense that, amid the complete darkness, it may create the impression of a sudden dawn.
Thus, the apostles Peter and Paul left a prophecy that must have seemed quite mysterious to their contemporaries: «The day of the Lord will come ... [at night]» (2 Peter 3:10, CUV'23, Ohiienko, and Synodal translations; see also 1 Thessalonians 5:2; compare with Amos 5:18–20). It is possible that this is an allusion to an Old Testament prophecy (Zephaniah 1:12), or perhaps to an even more ancient nighttime event from the book of Shemot (Exodus 12:29).
This phase of God’s wrath will come "like a robber” (Joel 1:15, translation [Ref. 23]) and enter «like a thief» (2 Peter 3:10). In the light of modern astronomical knowledge, meteor bodies will burst through a limited area of the sky, as if through an opening dug at night in the wall of a house (Matthew 24:43, translation [Ref. 24]), creating the impression that Yahweh Elohim Himself «would rend the heavens and come down» (Isaiah 64:1).
Through the radiant’s movement with the daily rotation of the celestial sphere, this fatal time will become a gigantic trap-net: «For it will come (fall) upon all who dwell on the face of the whole earth (that day)» (Luke 21:35; compare with Isaiah 24:17–18). These rare signs (Matthew 24:30; Luke 21:25) will precede unprecedented catastrophes and chaos on a global scale in all the countries of the world.
As a result of these events, «people fainting (grow weak) with fear (of the calamities) and with foreboding of what is coming (is coming upon the earth) on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken» (Luke 21:26, with the texts from other translations given in parentheses). At the same time, the cosmic cataclysm will cause the sea to be stirred up (verse 25), and enormous tsunamis will inundate almost all of the land [Ref. 12].
4. God’s Visitation of the Earth
The Almighty will surely visit the earth, as is repeatedly proclaimed in Holy Scripture (Zephaniah 1:8–12, 3:8; Habakkuk 3:3–6; Zechariah 2:10–12, 8:3; Nahum 1:3–6; Malachi 3:1–2; Ezekiel 37:24–28, 43:4–7; Psalms 18:10–12; Revelation 1:7–8, 19:11–21, etc.).
In vivid poetic imagery (archetypes), the prophet Micah (navi Mikha) describes the future Theophany in striking scenes.
«For behold, the Lord is coming out of his place (dwelling place), and will come down (descend) and tread upon the high places (summits) of the earth. And the mountains will melt under him (melt away), and the valleys will split open (fall apart), like wax before the fire (melting), like waters poured down a steep place ("His tread cleaves the valleys")» (Micah 1:3–4, ESV 2025; texts from other translations are given in parentheses).
At this time, the celestial sphere, weeping "stars" (enveloped in the glow of meteor bodies), will seem to ignite and explode, «the heavens will pass away with a roar» (2 Peter 3:10; in translation [Ref. 18] – "will disappear"). But why does the apostle describe this strange event as the disappearance of the celestial sphere? And why with a “roar”? The Greek ῥοιζηδόν (rhoizedon) literally means "with a whizzing sound," "with a roar," or "with a loud crash."
Could such an unprecedented natural effect of the physical "disappearance" or rupture of the atmosphere occur even as a result of a massive heavenquake and catastrophic changes in the state and motion of the Earth in its orbit (Isaiah 13:13)? Or are these descriptions merely poetic hyperbole devoid of specific physical meaning?
To answer these questions, let us turn to the study [Ref. 12]. The article scientifically substantiates the assumption that the cause of the astronomical radiant will be a meteor swarm of asteroidal origin—a vast cosmic stream, an airborne assault, a legion of darkness from the farthest reaches of the north, that will cross the orbital trajectory of our planet.
The movement of a massive cosmic body through the stratosphere and troposphere at a colossal speed of up to 120,000 km/h [Ref. 12] will be accompanied by the formation of a region of intense rarefaction (“the rending of the heavens”), a deafening roar and crackling caused by a powerful supersonic shock wave. The prophet Jeremiah (Yirmeyahu) warns precisely about these phenomena, expressing himself in the concepts and imagery of his era:
«The LORD will roar from on high (roars from heaven), and from his holy habitation utter his voice (thunders terribly)... The clamor (noise, rumbling, thunder) will resound to the ends of the earth ...» (Jeremiah 25:30–31). In light of modern physical concepts, such an effect can be compared with a powerful supersonic acoustic wave from an asteroid impact, which would circle the entire globe for the first time in approximately 32–34 hours.
«Disaster (calamity, trouble) is going forth from nation to nation ("Calamities will fall upon one country after another," translation [Ref. 18]), and a great tempest (great whirlwind) is stirring from the farthest parts of the earth!» (Jeremiah 25:32).
In the proposed physical reconstruction, this image can be associated with the global consequences of a powerful impact. The earth will be devastated by the Creator’s burning wrath from on high (Jeremiah 25:33–38; 30:23–24).
Our offended planet will become enraged, spewing fire, smoke, and sulfur from its lips, as tectonic faults and volcanic processes will be activated in response to the catastrophic impact, accompanied by emissions of fire, ash, gases, and sulfur-bearing compounds (Revelation 9:17).
5. When Trouble Follows Trouble, Disaster upon Disaster?
(1) the thunder of a supersonic shock wave, which will cause (2) a megaseismic shock and (3) a terrible rumble. Next, (4) a hurricane-force wind of colossal power will arise – a hypercan (hyperhurricane) thousands of kilometers in diameter; the funnel of a furious (5) vortex will descend to the ground, and everything on its surface will be consumed by (6) a blast of blazing fire.
The 6 stages of this global catastrophe correspond to the mysterious prophetic vision received by the biblical prophet Isaiah from the Heavenly Warrior more than 2,700 years ago (Isaiah 1:1).
«The LORD of hosts (of armies, of powers) will visit you with (1) thunder, (2) an earthquake, and (3) a great noise ("terrible noise," translation [Ref. 22]), (4) storm (hurricane), (5) whirlwind, and (6) the flame of a devouring fire» (Isaiah 29:6).
Similar destructive effects of these instruments of punishment are described by navi Nahum (Nahum 1:3–6): the shaking and trembling of the land (verse 5), the great noise in verse 6, and the storm of a shock wave accompanied by a cloud of superheated gases, sand, and rock dust. For «the clouds are the dust of his feet» (verse 3).
The prophet sees the rocks crumbling under the wrath of the Almighty, when «His wrath is poured out like fire» (verse 6, literally – as if from "hot breath"). He observes the drying up of the seas and rivers and the withering of vegetation on the mountains and hills under the effect of colossal heat (Nahum 1:4; compare with Amos 1:2, Isaiah 42:15).
The seer Habakkuk (Havakuk) describes a similar picture of the march of Yahweh Elohim in majesty and power (Habakkuk 3:6). «His brightness was like the light» (verse 4). His tread is accompanied by ground oscillations, the destruction of ancient mountains, and the sinking of the hills (verse 6, Synodal translation).
From the north (Jeremiah 1:13, «from the wind on the north side,» translation [Ref. 24]) will come the all-consuming, scorching wind of the LORD – "burning fire" (Habakkuk 3:5, translation CUV'23; in the Masoretic Text, “flame") from His flying arrows and flashing spear (verse 11). Havakuk sees the sea and rivers stirred up by the horses and victorious chariots of El Shaddai (verse 8); streams of water cutting through the ground (verse 9), and towering tsunamis (verse 10).
The One who causes the heavenly bodies to fall, threshing the planet, will strike it. “With fire and rain that floods the earth, and with sulfur falling from heaven, with huge stones, and terrible hail" (Sibylline Oracles 3:690, 601). As a result of the extraordinarily powerful impact, «the earth will be shaken out of its place» (Isaiah 13:13).
Her orbital velocity, orbital period, rotation period, orbital eccentricity, the positions of the northern and southern geographic and magnetic poles, as well as the (conventional) equatorial line, will change. As a result, the Moon, stars, and constellations will rise and set at different locations and at different times than before, while the Sun will visually (apparently) move along a new path among the zodiacal constellations.
6. An Unprecedentedly Strong Wind
The wind zone near the ground within the funnel (trunk) of a tornado can reach 4.2 km in diameter, as in the tornado near El Reno, Oklahoma, in 2013. The outer descending flow consists of cold air, water droplets, hail, soil, stones, and rock fragments, which rotate spirally at speeds of up to 600 km/h.The energy source of the powerful storm system that generates a tornado is the heat released during the condensation of water vapor and the phase transitions of water. The vapor is transported into the cold upper layers of the troposphere by internal updrafts of warm, moist air, whose speed can reach approximately 300 km/h.
Large-scale vortices arise within a vast atmospheric region, where a tropical cyclone hundreds or thousands of kilometers in diameter develops. Such cyclones (hurricanes, typhoons), with wind speeds ranging from 100 to 350 km/h, form over ocean surfaces with temperatures above 26.8°C, heated to a depth of several tens of meters.
However, the water temperature in the zone where hypercanes develop may greatly exceed 50°C. For example, this may occur at the sites of impacts by massive cosmic objects, as well as following powerful underwater volcanic eruptions. In such a case, winds of colossal, almost unimaginable speed (up to 800 km/h) will arise, covering an area the size of an entire continent and lasting from several weeks to several months.
The Old Testament prophets foretold the emergence of precisely such a grand natural phenomenon on the Day when Yahweh Elohim visits the earth. «Behold, the storm of the LORD! Wrath has gone forth, a whirling tempest» (Jeremiah 30:23; 25:32), «His way is in whirlwind and storm» (Nahum 1:3). The same phenomenon is seen by another prophet: «the LORD of hosts with thunder and with earthquake and great noise, with whirlwind» (Isaiah 29:6).
Under the pressure of the mighty wind, the Earth will howl, its coverings will be stirred up; in the sands of the deserts they will rise with a roar and whirl about amid the rumbling. It will seem as though the heavens are trembling, tilting, and splitting apart (Psalm 18:8–16); they will thunder like a trumpet, drawing out a dreadful song of lamentation, like thousands of mourners.
The scorched surface of the ground, the ruins of cities, destroyed roads, abandoned vehicles, and uprooted trees will be buried beneath the devourer of dirt – a thick layer of ash; for «dust (ashes) will continually fall» from the sky (Deuteronomy 28:24), like gray snow.
The scorched surface of the ground, the ruins of cities, destroyed roads, abandoned vehicles, and uprooted trees will be buried beneath the devourer of dirt—a thick layer of ash; for «dust (ashes) shall come down on you» from the sky (Deuteronomy 28:24), like gray snow.
7. The Disappearance of the Atmosphere?
«The stars of heaven will rot away (vanish, melt away), and the heavens will be rolled up like a scroll; all their starry host will fall ...» (Isaiah 34:4, translation [Ref. 22]). In the following verses appears the mysterious sword of the Almighty, covered in blood, which descends upon the earth (34:5–7), where "Edom serves Isaiah merely as a prototype of the entire world over which the Lord’s judgment will be carried out” [Ref. 16, p. 77].
The falling of meteor bodies is seen in a vision by John: «and the stars of the sky fell to the earth ... The sky vanished like a scroll that is being rolled up» (Revelation 6:13–14; more precisely, “split apart and rolled up,” translation [Ref. 18]). The sky will groan as though cleaved by the sword of Yahweh, while the acoustic noise from the flight of massive meteor bodies will surpass the roar of the trumpets of Jericho.
The collision of a cosmic body with the surface of our planet will cause worldwide titanic catastrophes of a cascading nature, including:
- a shock acoustic wave in the atmosphere and a gigantic vortex (Jeremiah 25:30);
- a great earthquake (Revelation 6:12) and an unprecedented heaven-shaking (verse 13);
- global oscillations of the Earth’s crust, causing «every (any) mountain and island was removed from its place» (Revelation 6:14);
- the ejection into the upper layers of the atmosphere of colossal amounts of dust, sand, ash, pulverized pumice, and other coarse particulate aerosols. As a result, the light of the heavenly bodies will be substantially weakened, so that «they did not shine for a third of the day, nor for a third of the night» (Revelation 8:12, translation CUV'23, [Ref. 22, 24]).
Like a cracked, unfolded scroll of papyrus, the expanse of the heavens will tremble and roll up under the action of a roaring vortex (Revelation 6:14; Isaiah 34:4), while the terrifying rumble «will resound to the ends of the earth» (Jeremiah 25:31). The apostle Peter writes of the same thing: «the heavens will pass away with a roar» (2 Peter 3:10; "with a loud roar", translation [Ref. 18]).
As a result of the sharp increase in the concentration of aerosols – mineral dust, smoke, ash from burned-up meteors, volcanic ash, water vapor, and droplets of sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids – the character and intensity of diffuse solar radiation will change radically. Toxic and hot precipitation will fall continuously, creating the illusion that the dome of the sky has exploded and is collapsing.
The emergence of a specific aerodisperse medium will produce distinctive optical and astronomical effects. On exposed mountain ranges, a bright glow in the sky will flare up in the morning and evening (Joel 2:1–2; Isaiah 18:3), while light passing through clouds of dust will give the heavenly bodies a blood-red hue (Joel 3:4; Revelation 12:3). The faces of the Sun, Moon, and stars will grow dim (Joel 3:15; Mark 13:24).
Later, the blue dome of the sky, scorched by fire, will disappear behind a dense veil of continuous ashfall, terrestrial dust, and meteoric dust; all this precipitation will resemble thick gray snow. What God has said will be fulfilled:
«The LORD will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust (ashes) shall come down on you until you are destroyed» (Deuteronomy 28:24). Impenetrable darkness will cover the planet for many days (Ezekiel 32:7–8; Amos 5:20; Isaiah 5:30, 8:22).
In addition to Peter, the prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 51:6), the psalmist (Psalm 102:26–27), Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 24:35), and the apostle John (Revelation 6:14) foretell the astonishingly unique event of the disappearance of the familiar appearance of the sky.
Certainly, the firmament will not physically cease to exist, as the author of the mistakenly assumes [Ref. 19, p. 378]. The heavens will not collapse with a roar or break into pieces, as they were imagined in archaic myths. Nevertheless, like an old garment, the heavens will «wear out like a garment» (Psalm 102:26), "tear" and «vanish like smoke» (Isaiah 51:6). For many months, the planet will be enveloped in monotonous, continuous half-darkness, resembling a dense gray fog.
The Sun, Moon, and stars cannot look indifferently upon the tragedy of the Earth; ashamed, they will hide for a long time behind a continuous cloud of dust and ash (Ezekiel 32:7–8). God will roll up the heavens like a garment (Hebrews 1:12) and change the familiar elements, so that «They will perish» (Psalm 102:26, more precisely, "they will disappear," Ohienko translation).
Only after several years of gradual aerosol fallout, when atmospheric dust pollution ceases, will the clear sky open again; then «peoples gather together, and kingdoms, to worship the Lord» (Psalm 102:22).
8. The Roar of the Trumpets of Jericho
In ancient times, thunder was regarded as an unmistakable manifestation of divine wrath [Ref. 1], caused by the violation of the order of the world established by the Creator. No wonder a popular proverb says: "Until the thunder strikes, the ungodly will not make the sign of the cross."
The prophet Jeremiah, announcing El Shaddai’s judgment upon the nations in the latter days, warns: «The LORD will roar from on high ("roars from heaven," translation [Ref. 18]) ... he will roar (terribly) mightily» (Jeremiah 25:30).
Then (2) «the clamor (in the Masoretic Text, "rumbling") will resound to the ends of the earth» (Jeremiah 25:31, "the roar will reach to the end," translation [Ref. 22]). After that, (3) «a great tempest (whirling storm) is stirring (will rise) from the farthest parts of the earth!» (verse 32). The prophet described the sequence of these images with remarkable precision, so it remains to explain their possible physical causes.
Following the acoustic shock wave from above, (1) a colossal atmospheric vortex (3), scientifically termed a "hypercan," will arise, caused by the gigantic release of water vapor and droplets at the site of a large asteroid impact (Revelation 8:8). The powerful (2) rumble, that is, the acoustic effect of the impact process, will circle the entire planet several times. At the point of impact, the pressure will instantaneously rise from tens to hundreds of gigapascals, and the temperature at the center of the plasma will exceed 10,000 °C [Ref. 12].
As a result of such an impact, an extremely powerful shock wave will form, capable of tearing apart mountains, destroying rocks, and breaking trees. The initial velocity of the shock wave will be hypersonic (Mach 50–60); even after being significantly reduced over hundreds of kilometers, it may remain close to 1,000 m/s, a magnitude comparable to the velocity of a bullet in flight. At the same time, the temperature of the shock-wave front will be no lower than 400 °C.
This exceptionally powerful impact explosion will produce an impact plume ("sultan") that will pierce the stratosphere and eject upward – into the mesosphere and thermosphere (to an altitude of 30 to 100 km and beyond) – more than 25 trillion tons of terrestrial rock, debris, dust, soot, and gases, as in the case of the Chicxulub asteroid.
After some time – from 2 hours (when about 25% of the ejecta returns) to 72 hours (when about 85% returns) – the high-energy ejecta in the form of incandescent fragments will return, heating the near-surface layer of the troposphere to 400 °C, while about 12% of the material will be ejected into outer space.
John sees the principal image which, in the reconstruction proposed by the author, corresponds to the cause of these destructions: «something like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown (fell) into the sea» (Revelation 8:8; "something like a huge mountain burning with fire fell into the sea," translation [Ref. 9]).
It will seem as though the dome of the heavens has exploded, and as a result of the global displacement of the Earth’s crust (Job 9:6; Isaiah 13:13), the supports that held it up will seem to shake and tremble (Job 26:11, translation [Ref. 24]).
Through the hypothetical "rupture" in the sky – the central zone of the meteor stream’s radiant – fire and hail will fall (Revelation 8:7), the ground will collapse, and underground waters will burst onto the surface, destroying everything around them.
The destruction of the natural elements (more precisely, "heavenly bodies," translation [Ref. 22]) on the Day of the Lord is foretold by the apostle Peter: «the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved» (2 Peter 3:10). He announces this to all who are waiting for the coming of the day of God (verse 12).
Massive cosmic objects will flare up from friction with the atmosphere, heating the surrounding air to several thousand degrees. Small meteor bodies traveling at speeds exceeding 11 km/s will undergo intense aerodynamic ablation, largely transforming into plasma and fine particulate ablation products before reaching the Earth’s surface. In other words, «All the host of heaven shall rot away» (Isaiah 34:4, more precisely: "the stars in the sky will wither" translation [Ref. 22]).
However, the "host" (verse 4) does not refer to literal stars at all – enormous, massive astronomical plasma objects that shine brightly. Rather, it refers specifically to meteors and meteoroids, which in ancient times were regarded as stars that had broken away from the solid firmament [Ref. 1, p. 552] and fallen to the ground.
The apostle Peter characterizes this event as follows: «the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt (will melt away) as they burn!» (2 Peter 3:12, ESV, with the wording “will melt” corresponding to the Synodal translation).
Indeed, in the pre-scientific perception of the world, the concept of “melting”, describing fundamental catastrophic changes in matter, occupied a special place [Ref. 1, p. 777]; compare, for example, Amos 9:5; Isaiah 64:1; Micah 1:4; Nahum 1:5.
The apostle Peter characterizes this event as follows: «the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and ethe heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!» (2 Peter 3:12). 9. Cosmic Bodies in the Bible
If smaller meteors completely evaporate and “melt” in the air, then larger bolides and asteroids will explode with a deafening roar upon colliding with the surface of our planet. Alternatively, they may fragment in its atmosphere as a result of enormous dynamic pressure and thermal stresses caused by aerodynamic heating during their deceleration (the temperature may reach 3,000 °C).
In full agreement with these physical processes, the apostle Peter states: «the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved» (2 Peter 3:10, more precisely: "will be destroyed," translation [Ref. 23]). At the same time, an extremely powerful acoustic shock wave will be generated [Ref. 13].
In the Bible, which was compiled during the pre-scientific period of human history, today’s small meteoric bodies can be correlated with the image of «sulfur and fire» (Genesis 19:24; Luke 17:29), meteorites with «glowing coals» (2 Samuel 22:9), «hailstones» (Isaiah 30:30; Ezekiel 13:11), and meteors with «the stars of the sky (that) fell to the earth» (Revelation 6:13) and «the stars (that) will be falling from heaven» (Mark 13:25).
Large bolides are referred to as the «arrows» and «spear» of the Most High (Habakkuk 3:11; Zechariah 9:14; Isaiah 50:11), the «sword» (Isaiah 34:5; Revelation 1:16; 19:21), «fire» (Genesis 19:24; Revelation 8:8), «a great star» (Revelation 8:10; 9:1), as well as «chariots» (Isaiah 66:15; Nahum 2:4; 3:2).
Massive asteroids appear in the visions of the seers as «a great mountain, burning with fire» (Revelation 8:8), «a stone» that was cut out of the mountain by no human hand (Daniel 2:34–35), or perhaps «his tongue like a devouring fire» (Isaiah 30:27).
The destruction caused by the impact of an asteroid with an equivalent diameter of about 15 km (calculated impact energy E ≈ 5 × 1024 J) can be compared, in terms of the energy released and global consequences, with supervolcanic eruptions (such as the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815). The yield of such an impact explosion (1.2 × 109 Mt TNT) would exceed many times over the yield (58.6 Mt TNT) of the most powerful thermonuclear bomb ever tested [Ref. 13].
A head-on collision of such a cosmic body with our planet, traveling at a speed exceeding 30 km/s, would result in the simultaneous ejection of about 10,000 km3 of incandescent material into the atmosphere. This order-of-magnitude estimate is based on scientific data from the Chicxulub event and the results of hydrodynamic impact modeling.
A significant portion of the enormous mass of this ejecta will consist of fine glassy material ("impact glass" – microtektites and spherules) and ultrafine particles of iron oxides and other iron compounds, formed as a result of high-temperature and oxidative processes during the impact. Settling slowly, this dust will return to the Earth’s surface over the course of several years (Deuteronomy 28:24).
Fragmented and molten rocks in the form of hot stone hail (Ezekiel 38:22; Isaiah 30:30) will fall in massive quantities onto a surface more than 1,500 km in diameter after the explosion, heating the air by hundreds of degrees. As a result, the solid dome according to archaic conceptions [Ref. 1, p. 552] will seem to collapse, «the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved» (2 Peter 3:12, translation [Ref. 9]).

The firmament will break apart with a crash, as «the powers of the heavens will be shaken» (Matthew 24:29; Luke 21:26; in a modern translation: "will lose their stability and be set in motion"). Subsequently, the folk wisdom will be fulfilled in full: "When one trouble comes, it brings another in its wake."
10. Global Fire
Fire from above and below will merge (Joel 2:30), causing widespread forest, steppe, savanna, and underground fires. Megafires will generate enormous pyrocumulonimbus clouds Pyrocumulonimbus (PyroCb), while the powerful impact ejecta will hurl several thousand gigatons of terrestrial and asteroidal material – dust, soot, sulfate aerosols, and more – into the stratosphere.
As a result, the concentrations of carbon oxides (CO, CO2), sulfur oxides (SOх), and nitrogen oxides (NOх) will increase sharply, while an acute oxygen deficit will occur locally in the near-surface layer of the atmosphere. Living organisms will die on a massive scale from thermal burns, smoke inhalation, oxygen deprivation, and poisoning by toxic combustion products, particularly carbon monoxide.
The entire planet will be engulfed in raging flames, and the biosphere will become a mass victim of a global incineration. Forests, gardens, plantations, pastures, oil fields, and even desert expanses will be engulfed by fire, while rivers, seas, and oceans will be covered by smoke. In the vast furnace roaring with storm and fire, everything that grows, flies, crawls, and runs will burn (Fig. 3).
This fiery flood, on the judgment «day is coming, burning like an oven» (Malachi 4:1), is also described by the biblical prophets through their familiar images, concepts, and terms:«And the streams of Edom shall be turned into pitch, and her soil into sulfur; her land shall become burning pitch» (Isaiah 34:9; according to other translations, it is not the soil itself but dust or ash – fine solid particles – that will be turned into sulfur), prophesies the seer, further explaining the causes of this cataclysm.
«For behold, the LORD will come in fire, and his chariots like the whirlwind (storm, hurricane, "his armies in clouds of dust," translation [Ref. 18]), to render his anger (literally, "hot breath") in fury and his rebuke with flames of fire» (Isaiah 66:15–16).
A characteristic feature of the heavenly fire will be its "depth": it «burns ("burns through the earth," translation [Ref. 18]) to the depths of Sheol» (Deuteronomy 32:22, "the realm of the dead," translation [Ref. 22]), «and burns the foundations of the mountains» deep within Sheol.
The prophet Joel sees its "breadth": «fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and flame has burned all the trees of the field» (Joel 1:19; 2:1–3). The flame, running relentlessly without feet, will be kindled by God Himself, and unbearable heat will scorch the dry land from north to south (Ezekiel 20:46–48), causing lakes and rivers, as well as certain areas of seas and oceans, to boil (Job 41:23).
11. The Perishing of All Living Things
Extremely heated gases that burn the very foundations of the mountains [Refs. 18, 23], together with a kind of heavenly host (Joel 2:4–11), will be poured out by the Heavenly Warrior in His righteous indignation, warning: «all the earth shall be consumed (devoured)», «in the fire of my jealousy (indignation)» (Zephaniah 3:8; Malachi 4:1).
In the New Testament era, such eschatological punishment on a vast and devastating scale is proclaimed by Jesus Christ Himself (Matthew 13:38–42), John the Baptist (Matthew 3:10–12), as well as the apostles Peter (2 Peter 3:7–10) and Paul (2 Thessalonians 1:7–8). A vision of a world consumed by flames was also revealed to the apostle John (Revelation 8:5–7; 9:18; 17:16).
As a result of critically high local temperatures of the air (50°C–400°C), surface waters (60°C–98°C), and soils (100°C–300°C), as well as acute oxygen deprivation, poisoning by toxic gases, and hot acid rain, birds, fish, animals, and humans will perish (Hosea 4:3). «I will utterly sweep away everything from the face of the earth, declares the LORD» (Zephaniah 1:2–3).
In the days of this battle, military footwear, producing a loud crunch as crushed pumice is trampled underfoot, and clothing stained by red aerosol rain will – in the biblical image – «be burned as fuel for the fire» (Isaiah 9:5). They will ignite from the hot breath of the Almighty – the furious wind of the shock wave, laden with superheated gases, rock dust, sand, and molten fragments.
The wicked will burn like dry straw (Luke 3:17). Even the strong and mighty, lying helpless as though drunk (Isaiah 51:20), will flare up in agony amid the flames (Isaiah 50:11), like a bundle of dry brush, «with none to quench them» (Isaiah 1:31; “no one will be able to put out that fire,” translation [Ref. 18]). Temporarily, only those who manage to hide in caves or bury themselves deep in the ground will survive (Isaiah 2:19).
The raging widespread fires will be impossible to extinguish because of the raging hypercanes, firestorms, and whirlwinds (Isaiah 29:6; 66:15; Psalm 50:3). Therefore, from this all-encompassing storm, «the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed» (2 Peter 3:10; translations: “the earth together with everything on it will be burned,” translation [Ref. 18]; CUV’23; Synodal).
Stop. If the entire planet will be burned "together with everything on it," since «the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved» (2 Peter 3:12; Synodal translation: "the burning heavens will be destroyed"), why then will only one-third of the trees be burned (Revelation 8:7), rather than absolutely ALL of them?
The fire simply will not have enough time to destroy two-thirds of the trees because of continuous torrential rains that will extinguish even the largest centers of fire. Billions of tons of water vapor, hot ash, soot, and other airborne particulate matter and aerosols will enter the atmosphere, causing intense global precipitation as a result of the massive condensation of water vapor.
With his description of the burning heavens and the destruction of the heated heavenly bodies, the apostle Peter concludes his brief yet remarkably comprehensive and vivid account of the future Yom Yahweh (2 Peter 3:12). We, however, will continue our systematic study of biblical prophecies.
12. Will the World Ocean Boil?
Uninvited guests will rapidly overrun the planet, which will tremble from the roar of the "heavenly cavalry." Reaching shallow waters, the "riders" will hiss and boil the surroundings like a fire fanned by an invisible force. Thanks to numerous bright flashes of meteors in the radiant region, the night will turn into a «morning» but later, as up to 25 trillion tons of ash, dust, soot, and vapor are ejected, «darkens the day into night» (Amos 5:8; Isaiah 13:10).
The watery abyss will roar (Isaiah 5:30; Luke 21:25), rise up and surge onto the dry land (Habakkuk 3:10; Revelation 12:15), flare up (Amos 7:4), and boil (Job 41:23). Commenting on the texts of 2 Peter 3:7–10, the author of [Ref. 19] puts forward a rather astonishing version of events:
"This fire will be the result of a thermonuclear chain reaction (for what reason would it arise??). In this reaction, water, decomposing into oxygen and hydrogen, will be an excellent fuel. Therefore, to put it in simple terms, the seas and oceans, as well as other bodies of water, will literally be burned up …" (p. 860).
No. To put it in simple terms, they will literally NOT burn up. However, certain areas of the World Ocean and regions will indeed boil. This will occur in zones of reawakened underwater volcanoes, at asteroid impact sites, as well as in areas of rift tectonic seismic ruptures triggered by thermal explosions—geological faults more than 1,000 km long.
Through deep fractures in the Earth’s crust at sites of impact craters, ruptures, and submarine volcanism, ocean water will penetrate into the extremely hot and locally partially molten rocks of the upper mantle. Heating intensely and rising upward, it will surge and boil as a result of the rapid drop in hydrostatic pressure, producing enormous quantities of steam that will rise to the surface in countless bubbles.
Seismic shock waves and a submarine thermal surge will trigger an avalanche-like “clathrate catastrophe” – the massive degassing of methane hydrates beneath the ocean floor and in permafrost zones. Billions and tens of billions of cubic meters of methane (CH4), bursting to the surface, will turn the water into hoary foam and c create an explosive gas blanket over the waters. The dissolution of accompanying CO2 in the water will cause rapid ocean acidification (a decrease in pH), while CH4, ignited by the heavenly fire, will engulf the surface of the seas in flames (Amos 7:4).
Gases from the hydrates, rising rapidly upward, will “boil” the water and turn it into foam. The author of the Book of Job describes this process: «He makes the deep boil like a pot; he makes the sea like a pot of ointment» (Job 41:31; more precisely, "a brew," as reflected in the Masoretic Text). This thick "ointment" effect will be created by a layer of volcanic pumice, ash, soot, and impact dust floating on the surface of the ocean (sea) during active gas bubbling through the water.
Later, above the surface, this combustible gas mixture will ignite from the heavenly «fire» (Amos 7:4). The oceans, seething with geothermal fury, will burn as well, as will the near-surface air due to methane, ethane, propane, hydrogen sulfide, and other gases entering the atmosphere from submarine oceanic gas-hydrate deposits and other gas-saturated sedimentary rocks (including mountainous rocks).
The products of this large-scale combustion will rise into the stratosphere and mix with desert dust and volcanic ejecta, causing the effect of “global atmospheric dimming.” Moreover, as a result of tsunamis and seismic disturbances, the islands will "flee" (that is, shift substantially or sink), mountains will collapse, and fortification and city walls will fall.
This is precisely what John sees in his vision and what Ezekiel prophesies. «And every island fled away, and no mountains were to be found» (Revelation 16:20; “all the islands disappeared,” translations [Refs. 18, 22]). «And the mountains shall be thrown down, and the cliffs shall fall, and every wall shall tumble to the ground» (Ezekiel 38:20).
The activity of active volcanoes will increase many times over, long-extinct ones will awaken, and new ones will form, as it is written about the actions of the Almighty: «who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke!» (Psalm 104:32). The volcanoes will smoke and seethe like a cauldron on the fire and will burn in flames like bushes (Isaiah 64:2, translation [Ref. 18]). As the saying goes, "Before one trouble dies down, another flares up."
13. Seismic Storm
However, it will not be the total battle of enraged elements that proves to be the main cause of many calamities, but an unprecedentedly powerful shock (Revelation 16:18–20) of impact origin, caused by the fall of a massive cosmic body (8:8; 9:1–2). An impact megaseism will arise as a result of the mechanical and thermal explosion accompanying the fall of a massive asteroid: «like a great mountain, burning with fire, was thrown into the sea» (Revelation 8:8).
An enormous amount of energy (Q ≈ 5 × 10²⁴ J) will be released instantaneously at the impact site. The release of energy on this scale will cause fundamental deformations of the Earth’s crust, global oscillations of its surface, displacements of continental masses, shifts of lithospheric plates, and the propagation of a geo-impact wave in the form of elastic oscillations throughout the entire globe – a global transplanetary megaseism (earthquake and seaquake, Haggai 2:6).
The estimated magnitude of such a large earthquake could reach M ≈ 12–13, and its energy would be several orders of magnitude greater than that of the strongest seismic shocks recorded in human history. For comparison, the annual release of the Earth’s total seismic energy is approximately 1019 J [Ref. 13], whereas the formation of a single asteroid crater 250 km in diameter releases approximately 1024 J.
This level of energy release will cause large-scale deformation of the lithosphere and activate numerous tectonic faults. The lithosphere will respond not simply with shocks, but with wave-like deformation of the entire planetary surface, with an amplitude of vertical oscillations that may reach several meters near the zone of greatest impact, and even in distant, seismically quiet regions – tens of centimeters or more.
This is why the apostle John calls the future megaseism «great» unprecedented in all of human history (Revelation 16:18). It will cause tectonic disturbances throughout the world (Luke 21:11), even in regions where they have never been recorded before.
Series of gigantic seismic shocks triggered by an impact from space will destroy roads, bridges, dams, levees, and cities, displace mountains and islands (Revelation 6:14) into the heart of the seas (16:20; Psalm 46:3), radically alter the macro- and microrelief, and split the land apart.
As promised: «The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart (crumbles, breaks apart), the earth is violently shaken (trembles)» (Isaiah 24:19; "it will spread out in different directions," translation [Ref. 24]).
Later, enormous waves of water will surge in, flooding depressions, fissures, and cracks: «the raging waters swept on; the deep gave forth its voice; it lifted its hands on high» (Habakkuk 3:10; "the sea abyss roared and raised its waves upward," translation [Ref. 22]), destroying coastlines and flooding continents.
Streams of tears will gush from the eyes of our life-giving Earth, while underground accumulations of water, oil, and gas will erupt in fountains from its depths; its trembling face will melt like wax (Micah 1:4; Psalm 97:4–5), and the surface relief will be leveled (Isaiah 40:4).
The intensity of this powerful impact near the epicenter will reach the maximum level of XII on the European Macroseismic Scale (EMS-98). Even at a considerable distance from the impact site, the catastrophic shaking will be accompanied by pronounced wave-like oscillations of the ground surface, with wave heights ranging from 0.3 m to 1 meter.
It is precisely such planetary-scale macroseisms that the Bible speaks of. «I looked on the mountains, and behold, they were quaking, and all the hills moved to and fro» (Jeremiah 4:24), which will result from calamity from the north and great destruction (Jeremiah 4:6) during the appearing of the LORD (theophany).
«The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him (sways, rises), the world and all who dwell in it» (Nahum 1:5), when El Shaddai visits them in storm, whirlwind, and clouds of dust and fine dust (verse 3).
«Shall not the land tremble (shudder, sway, shake) on this account, and everyone mourn who dwells in it, and all of it rise like the Nile, and be tossed about (become agitated) and sink again (will it not keep swaying, translation [Ref. 24]), like the Nile of Egypt?» (Amos 8:8; Psalm 60:4), on that Day (Amos 8:9).
As we can see, the biblical prophets describe wave-like rises and falls of the land, causing islands and mountains to shift as they move from their places (Revelation 6:14). The mountains will rear up and collapse into the valleys (Ezekiel 38:20; Isaiah 40:4; Micah 1:4; Habakkuk 3:6). The hills will leap like young bulls, while mighty trees will be tossed up and down, breaking like matchsticks (Psalm 29:4–6).
Without a doubt, this cataclysm will erupt on the day of a worldwide seismic storm at the end of the existence of this human race (Revelation 16:18), at the time of the Great Theophany (Nahum 1:3–5; Habakkuk 3:3–6). And even if the seers proclaimed events that were close to their own time, they could simultaneously prophesy about similar but much more extensive and distant eschatological events – according to the principle of "prophetic perspective".
14. The Future Cataclysm Through the Eyes of the Prophet
In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus Christ gives a fragmentary account of the great astronomical signs of the future, especially terrifying phenomena in the heavens and destructive earthquakes «in various places» (Luke 21:11). The prophet Isaiah, however, systematizes and records the totality of these mysterious catastrophic upheavals.
• A unique shaking of the heavens (Isaiah 13:13a), when «All the host of heaven» will fall, wither, and disappear (Isaiah 34:4; in other translations: "the lights," "the stars," "heavenly powers") – in the scientific interpretation of this imagery, meteor bodies.
• A rare megaseism of the lithosphere, during which «the earth will be shaken from its place» (Isaiah 13:13)—in the modern physical understanding, the planet will undergo large-scale changes in its geodynamic state: oscillations of the Earth’s crust, shifts of lithospheric plates, changes in the position of the geographic poles, and even slight changes in the parameters of the Earth’s rotation and its orbit;
• A global tectonic rift: the lithosphere will shake, crack, and spread out like land plowed by a gigantic plow. «The earth is utterly broken, the earth is split apart (crumbles, breaks apart), the earth is violently shaken (trembles)» (Isaiah 24:19; "it will spread out in different directions," translation [Ref. 24]).
• Powerful, relentless oscillations of the land. «The earth staggers like a drunken man, it sways like a hut» (Isaiah 24:20a);
• Irreversible deformation of the relief. As a result of powerful oscillations, tectonic deformations, collapses, and landslides, mountains and hills will in places be permanently lowered. Our traveler, like a drunken man, «will fall, and will not rise again!» (Isaiah 24:20b). Then the prophet’s call will be fulfilled: «Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low» (Isaiah 40:4), and the mountains will quake at His presence (Isaiah 64:1);
• Destruction of infrastructure. «The wasted city is left desolate; every house is shut up so that none can enter» (Isaiah 24:10; “the doors are blocked with rubble,” translation [Ref. 18]);
• Worldwide "imprisonment" of the heavenly and earthly powers. The host of heaven and the earthly kings «will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit» (Isaiah 24:19–22; in other translations: "in a cellar," "in a pit," "in a trench," "in a prison");
• Appearance of blood shed on the surface of the earth. «The earth will disclose the blood shed on it, and will no more cover its slain» (Isaiah 26:21, translation [Ref. 22]). From the context, it follows that this does not refer to the literal blood of people killed long ago; the earth, which normally conceals the dead in graves, will on that Day expose their bones (compare Jeremiah 8:1).
But what could the prophet have seen on the surface of the earth when describing it as one that would «disclose the blood shed on it»? Perhaps a blood-red liquid formed by the mixing of rainwater with the red dust of deserts and fine iron-bearing particles and products of their high-temperature oxidation, brought to the surface by atmospheric and impact ejecta.
From what the prophet saw in the vision (1:1), he cries out in despair: «Terror (horror) and the pit (terrible pit) and the snare (trap, noose) are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth!» (Isaiah 24:17). At that moment, the one «who flees at the sound of the terror (horror) shall fall into the pit ("many will fall into pits," translation [Ref. 18]), and he who climbs out of the pit shall be caught in the snare (trap, net)» (verse 18).
It is worth noting that verses 17–18 contain a clear allusion to a traditional hunting method of the ancient Jews—hunting pits covered with camouflaged nets [Ref. 1, p. 583]. The inhabitants of the planet will unexpectedly fall into such traps (Psalm 141:7), as cracks and cavities will suddenly form beneath their feet, in places reaching tens of meters in width, hundreds of meters in depth, and several kilometers in length.
Into these chasms will slide trees, abandoned vehicles, bridges, abandoned houses, and entire city blocks; lakes will pour into them, and rivers will plunge into them; entire sections of land and ocean floor will collapse. In a wild dance, all four elements will clash: earth will mix with water, air with fire, and flames will engulf the land. A unique, seething mixture will arise, consisting of dust, ash, sand, rocks, hot blood-red rain, enormous hail, impenetrable darkness, and brilliant lightning.
15. Lightning Bolts
Lightning bolts are powerful electrical discharges in the atmosphere (Fig. 4), which occur as a result of the accumulation and separation of electrical charges. Their length may reach tens of kilometers, the diameter of the luminous channel several centimeters, and their duration a fraction of a second.
The energy of a single powerful lightning bolt can reach billions of joules, the electrical voltage hundreds of millions of volts, and the electric current tens to hundreds of thousands of amperes.
The formation of a lightning channel occurs very rapidly: the stepped leader propagates at speeds on the order of hundreds to thousands of kilometers per second, while the return stroke travels significantly faster.
Lightning bolts are accompanied by a blinding flash of light and a loud sound impulse (thunder), which occurs as a result of the instantaneous heating of the air to about 30,000 °C and its explosive expansion. As the saying goes: "First comes the flash, then the crack, then the fright." Traditional atmospheric discharges will be intensified by discharges of the extreme class – "superbolts" (superbolts), whose current can reach 300–500 kA.
Grand-scale triboelectrification – that is, the electrification of particles during collisions and friction caused by the movement of ash, impact dust, and microdroplets of molten materials in the air – will create conditions for extraordinarily powerful electrostatic discharges. The atmosphere will become a gigantic generator, and millions of volcanic and impact lightning bolts will lace the sky, fusing the ground and leaving branching fulgurites on the rocks.
This is a scientific fact: lightning and thunder during a storm are produced by natural atmospheric processes, not by the mythological Zeus or Perun. However, according to the vision of the apostle John, the future grand atmospheric phenomena will accompany not an ordinary thunderstorm, but a catastrophic complex of atmospheric and geophysical phenomena unprecedented in intensity, whose culmination will be a megaseism of the lithosphere.
«And there were flashes of lightning ("light," translation [Ref. 11]), rumblings (roaring sounds), peals of thunder, and a great earthquake (powerful, terrifying) such as there had never been since man was on the earth, so great was that earthquake» (Revelation 16:18; 8:5; 11:19).
Why, then, does the seer, when describing lightning, thunder, and a global upheaval, not mention the familiar storm clouds that accumulate electrical charge in the homosphere (for example, Jeremiah 10:13; Psalm 135:7)? This may mean that the phenomena referred to primarily concern blinding optical flashes and shock waves from the explosions of superbolides in the air, rather than merely the familiar natural atmospheric process.
Does what has been said mean that there will be no actual storm clouds or corresponding electrical discharges on the Day of the LORD? Not at all. The electrical discharges will be extraordinarily intense, for the prophet saw: «And the angel took the censer and filled it with fire (burning coals) from the altar and threw it on the earth» (Revelation 8:5).
Within the proposed physical reconstruction, thermal sublimation and vaporization of the material of this «censer» could cause excessive ionization and atmospheric loading with microparticles of free iron. Later, enormous quantities of highly electrified ash particles and water vapor will be added to it, massively ejected during global volcanism and the fall of the burning cosmic mountain into the sea (Revelation 8:8).
As a result, numerous powerful lightning bolts may cover the sky like a gigantic luminous net, leaving molten traces in the soil and rocks at the points of impact in the form of fulgurites. These discharges will be accompanied by a trumpet-like rumble, fire, earthquakes, and blood-red rains (Revelation 8:7), and a mysteriously anomalous “«heavy (great) hail» will fall (11:19).
16. Unique Precipitation
New trials begin when the situation is already critical. The apostle saw: «There were flashes of lightning (shone), rumblings (roaring sounds), peals of thunder, and an earthquake», and then «heavy (great) hail» (Revelation 11:19).In other words, the formation of ice in the atmosphere will occur after the impact that caused a powerful seismic shock, rumbling, and spark discharges. From another vision (Revelation 16:21), we learn about the mass of the precipitation: these are blocks of ice weighing approximately 35 kg, with a characteristic diameter of ≈ 0.4 meters!
Could John have been mistaken or exaggerating? After all, in modern nature there is no precipitation in the form of ice balls of such enormous mass; normally, their size ranges from 1 mm to several centimeters. No, the prophet was not mistaken: calculations show that the formation and suspension of such massive ice blocks in principle do not violate the laws of physics.
Thus, to keep an ice block 0.4 meters in diameter and weighing about 35 kg suspended in the air (Revelation 16:21), the updraft within the cloud, as calculations show, must have a vertical velocity on the order of 100 m/s (360 km/h) or greater.
On Earth, such conditions could theoretically arise in extreme convective systems, particularly in hypercanes – mega-hurricanes capable of forming over exceptionally hot areas of the ocean with temperatures exceeding 50°C. At their center, enormous masses of water vapor would rise into the upper layers of the stratosphere, returning to the ground in the form of devastating ice bombardment.
The word «hail» occurs four times in the Greek text of the book of Revelation, and there is no basis for attributing another meaning to it. Moreover, among the five punishments of God’s judgment listed in the Third Sibylline Book, “terrible hail” is mentioned (Sibylline Oracles 3:691); this cataclysm is also mentioned in the Third Book of Ezra (2 Esdras 15:13, 41).

The physical consequences of John’s described fall of the burning mountain into the sea (Revelation 8:8), which is considered in this article as an asteroid, will also include:
- The formation on the surface of the ocean of a colossal zone of boiling liquid and superheated steam;
- A gigantic turbulent burst of water vapor and droplets into the troposphere and stratosphere, reaching altitudes of up to 30 km and higher;
- The emergence of large-scale vortices—hypercanes that will hurl enormous volumes of water, sand, and dust into the upper layers of the atmosphere.
Inside these “ice bombs,” there may be sand, pebbles, pieces of wood, and other debris. The ice fragments will gradually grow to a diameter of 0.4 meters or more, thanks to the sustained lifting capacity of powerful updrafts within the vortex.
David, describing the theophany (Psalm 18:8–16), mentions, alongside the earthquake, glowing coals, and fire falling from heaven, the hail of the LORD (verses 13, 14). Ezekiel calls the blocks of ice «hail» (Ezekiel 13:11–13; 38:22), and the powerful vortex a «stormy wind» (13:11; "devastating storm," translation CUV’23; "there will be a strong wind and a whirlwind will come, and the wall will fall," [Ref. 18]).
The prophet Isaiah sees the devastating consequences of falling frozen water and torrential rain: «hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter (your refuge)» (Isaiah 28:17; 28:2), when the «overwhelming whip» (verse 15, "overwhelming calamity," translation CUV’23) passes through.
For «the LORD will cause his majestic voice to be heard and the descending blow of his arm to be seen, in furious anger and a flame of devouring fire, with a cloudburst and storm and hailstones» (Isaiah 30:30; translation [Ref. 18]: “the power of the LORD – a storm with heavy rain and great hail”; see also 29:6).
The storm, torrential rain, and large chunks of ice, like fangs falling from a dragon’s jaws, will crash down upon the earth in spring, when the barley is in ear but the wheat has not yet ripened – just as in the days of the Egyptian plagues (Exodus 9:31–33).
This raises the question: why do the prophets say nothing about snow, which, logically, should have fallen in large quantities? They report nothing about it, describing only torrential rain and anomalously large hail (Revelation 8:7; Ezekiel 13:13; Isaiah 30:30). In fact, on the Day of the LORD there will be torrential rain lasting for many days, but definitely not snow. This follows from the following considerations.
The snow crystals that will form in the high, cold layers of the atmosphere will melt and partially evaporate as they pass through the significantly warmer lower layers (+50°C to +400°C). At the same time, water vapor and droplets entering the relatively colder layers of the atmosphere will condense again.
The atmosphere will be heated by the influx of hot impact ejecta, incandescent gases, as well as the heat and products of large-scale fires, volcanic eruptions, supervolcanic explosions, and so forth. Additional heat – the latent heat of condensation – will be released as enormous amounts of water vapor transition into the liquid state, sustaining powerful convective flows.
As a result of the sharp increase in temperature, the relative humidity of the air in the lower layers of the atmosphere will decrease; however, the overall water vapor content will remain anomalously high. Under such conditions, the normal structure of rain clouds will be disrupted, and precipitation will form predominantly within powerful convective systems and vortices.
17. What “Blood” Is Meant?
Within the context of the reconstruction proposed by the author, the seer in chapter 8 describes, in pre-scientific language, phenomena that can be interpreted as the fall of meteorites, bolides, and asteroids (“fire” in verse 7). Their flight, shaking the heavens with the trumpet-like rumble of shock waves, and their impacts will cause the subsequent formation of countless blocks of ice in the atmosphere (see §16).
Wait a moment. Where would the mysterious blood come from amid the unprecedented mixture of strange natural precipitation consisting of enormous hail and fire? And how can this be connected with the following sign: «a third of the sea became blood»? (Revelation 8:8).
The author of [Ref. 14] suggested: "The terrible hail will kill many living creatures – birds, animals, and even people – and a wind of incredible force will carry their blood and mix it with the hail. Thus, the hail will be red to some extent" (p. 105).
This version encounters a number of serious physical difficulties, as does the hypothesis that one-third of the ocean would turn red due to the mass death of marine animals struck by a meteor [Ref. 14, p. 106]. In the text of Revelation, the image of blood is likely connected with the biblical and cultural understanding of blood at that time:
- It serves as a means of ritual purification (Leviticus 17:11; [Ref. 15, p. 127]);
- The biblical tradition also describes a supernatural transformation of water into blood; other substances may likewise be transformed, suddenly changing their color to red [Ref. 1, p. 567]. For example, in the case mentioned in the Book of Exodus (Shemot): «the water that you shall take from the Nile will become blood on the dry ground» (Exodus 4:9; "as soon as the water touches the ground, it will immediately turn into blood," translation [Ref. 18]).
Hard as it is to imagine, if this imagery is understood literally, the blood of the people trampled on the earth will be poured out from above (Revelation 8:7; Ezekiel 32:6). Such bloody rain mixed with hail and fire will pour down as if from the womb of heaven, torn open by the red dragon (Revelation 12:3), ripped apart by the horns of the scarlet beast from the abyss (17:16).
A similar picture of the future of Egypt is foreseen by the Old Testament seer, conveying the direct speech of God. «I will drench the land even to the mountains with your flowing blood, and the ravines will be full of you» (Ezekiel 32:6; "I will pour your blood over the mountains; it will soak the whole land and fill the rivers with it," translation [Ref. 18]). Figuratively speaking, it will rush in streams from the mountains, fill the rivers, and flood the valleys.
Is there a scientific explanation for this mysterious and unique "bleeding" from the sky? If so, what substance could give atmospheric precipitation its characteristic blood-red color?
18. Physicochemical Process
Unlike on Earth, where iron in nature is predominantly found in a bound state – as part of oxides (the red mineral hematite Fe2O3, magnetic magnetite Fe3O4, brown limonite 2Fe2O3 × 3H2O, and other "iron ores") – in meteoritic material, a significant portion of it occurs in a free, native state.
The smallest meteoric bodies can lose up to 100% of their mass through ablation (the process of vaporization, melting, and mechanical fragmentation caused by friction with the air). Medium-sized bodies that reach the surface as meteorites, depending on their mass, velocity, and composition, can lose 50% to 90% or more of their initial mass during atmospheric entry.
Asteroids passing through the Earth’s atmosphere lose a much smaller fraction of their mass, but during an impact they may vaporize completely or almost completely. For an asteroid with a mass of 5 trillion tons, the potential amount of impact material that could enter the atmosphere in the form of vapor, primary impact dust, and atmospheric aerosols (particles ranging in size from 0.1 μm to 100 microns) can be estimated to be on the order of 0.5 to 5 trillion tons; a more precise value depends on the parameters of the impact event.
Thus, a colossal amount of fine meteoritic and impact material is produced. Hot water vapor, lifted into the air during the impact, condenses on these microparticles (particularly iron particles). In the presence of water and oxygen, intense redox reactions will occur, as a result of which reddish-brown iron oxides and oxyhydroxides may form.
This "rust" may color raindrops and hailstones of extraordinary size a crimson hue. Therefore, the apostle John sees that after the fall of the heavenly censer «there followed hail and fire, mixed with blood, and these were thrown upon the earth» (Revelation 8:7; Psalm 18:14).
From the pouring out of the second bowl, «it became like the blood of a corpse, and every living thing died that was in the sea» (Revelation 16:3). The red liquid will appear both above and below – exactly according to the LORD’s promise: «And I will show wonders ("omens", translation [Ref. 24] and the Synodal; "signs," translations CUV’23 and Ohiyenko) in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke» (Joel 3:30).
To ensure a correct understanding of the visions of the biblical prophets, it is necessary to explain the dual mechanism for the formation of the “blood-red waters”:
1. Atmospheric: fine iron and other iron-bearing particles of meteoritic dust, interacting with water vapor and oxygen, may undergo oxidation, forming fine particles of iron oxides and oxyhydroxides. Entering water droplets, they will give atmospheric precipitation a blood-red or reddish-brown color (Revelation 8:7).
2. Biogeochemical: the deposition of trillions of tons of iron-rich dust into the ocean will cause local and regional “fertilization” of the waters with iron. This may lead to large-scale phytoplankton blooms, including, under favorable conditions, blooms of certain species of dinoflagellates, some of which are capable of producing toxic "red tides" . The water may turn into a turbid, poisonous, viscous liquid—figuratively speaking, «it became like the blood of a corpse» (Revelation 16:3); marine fauna will die out in such waters.
Why, then, does the New Testament seer insist that the water will not turn into ordinary blood, but into a distinctive form – «like the blood of a corpse»? As a result, «every living thing died that was in the sea» (Revelation 16:3), as well as in lakes and rivers, when the water became bitter (8:11) and foul-smelling (Exodus 7:17–18).
First, the surface of water bodies may acquire a dark-red color due to iron-bearing particles carried by atmospheric and dust-and-sand flows. Second, the liquid, made foul-smelling by the bodies of decomposed organisms, will become extremely turbid and laden with suspended particles – outwardly resembling the clotted blood of a corpse – due to the influx of trillions of tons of mineral dust, volcanic ash, and fine rock particles. Because of this precipitation, the rivers will flow slowly, like olive oil.
From the acute lack of oxygen in this liquid rusty slurry, coastal aquatic organisms will suffocate. Another part of the marine organisms, described in Revelation as one-third, may die as a result of abnormally high temperatures, hydrodynamic shock waves, and sharp local and regional acidification following the fall of the mountain-like asteroid into the hydrosphere (Revelation 8:8–9).
Thus, when the bloody downpour comes crashing down, the red and polluted waters of the seas, rivers, and springs will resemble «blood» (Revelation 8:8; 14:20; 16:3–4), and the earth will be saturated with it (Isaiah 26:21; Ezekiel 32:6). In this ritual symbol of life force and death, the ruins of cities will be engulfed, and then the prophecy of the Lord Jesus Christ will be completely fulfilled.
«Therefore the present generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets, shed from the foundation of the world» (Luke 11:50, translation [Ref. 22]; Isaiah 63:6). Truly, «all these things will come upon this generation» (Matthew 23:36; compare verse 35).
19. The Dominion of Darkness
Having suffered a powerful impact shock, the disfigured and bloodied Earth will rage like a fury, boil and darken with anger. Hot vapor will condense, the planet’s covering will become saturated with water, and solid black thunderclouds will move low, shielding the body of the trembling planet from the bombardment.
In the impenetrable darkness, thunderstorm flashes will blaze, stirred by countless lightning bolts, and thunder will roar ominously; a cosmic assault of meteor bodies will strike this heavy atmospheric shield. Resisting, the battered Earth will crush the chariots, in a surge of strength split the siege weapons, and the enemy’s shattered ranks will scatter – none can stop those who flee from the wrath of El Shaddai (Psalm 18:8–15).
The fervor of the hot "assault troops" – bolides that have broken through the Earth’s defenses – will cool; their former destructive power is gone. The siege weapons are destroyed, the chariots broken, the cavalry ground to dust; those who blasted the sky, wounded the sea, tore open the land, and shattered everything on the planet have been reduced to dust (Daniel 2:35).
The iron rod will be broken – the empire of evil and the prison of nations; the great signs and deceptive wonders will vanish. After the active stage of the asteroid bombardment has ended, the heated atmosphere will gradually begin to lose the accumulated heat. This will occur through the radiation of energy into outer space and the gradual change in heat exchange with the oceans and land, as well as through a decrease in the incoming solar energy.
A decrease in air temperature to the "dew point,” at which the relative humidity reaches 100%, will cause massive condensation (in Latin, “thickening”) of the hot vapor. In other words, water vapor will massively transition into the liquid phase, forming cloud droplets.
David sees precisely this process in the mysterious theophany: «He made darkness around him his canopy (covering, curtain, shelter), thick clouds, a gathering of water» (2 Samuel 22:12; "He gathered the waters of the clouds into a storm cloud," translation [Ref. 18]).
Through the intensive condensation of vapor in the troposphere, a continuous, thick cloud cover may form. A single black thundercloud will hang very low, as if the torn sky had descended upon the earth. The prophet sees: «and the heavens above be dark» (Jeremiah 4:28, in the Masoretic Text, "will turn black")). Below, the darkness will spread to the east and west, north and south, and it will not be possible to disperse it by hand.
According to calculations within the proposed model, for at least 6 weeks, the Sun, the Moon, and the stars may completely disappear from view. The prolonged eschatological period of the wrath of Yahweh is called by the prophet Zephaniah «a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and thick darkness (mist)» (Zephaniah 1:15). As the folk saying goes about a dark night: "The black cow will bellow, and swallow up the whole world."
The decrease in near-surface air temperature will occur against a background of almost complete optical opacity of the atmosphere (Τau ≫ 1). Thousands of gigatons of dust, soot, volcanic ash, and sulfate aerosols may form an extremely dense aerosol shield capable of blocking almost all direct solar radiation.
After the initial infrared pulse from the incandescent heavens, a profound darkness will descend upon the Earth – a blackness that can physically be touched, «a darkness to be felt» (Exodus 10:21; Ezekiel 32:7–8; Isaiah 8:22; 5:30; 60:2; Amos 5:18; Revelation 16:10). The reduction of sunlight intensity below the "compensation point" for most plants will cause a sharp decline in photosynthetic productivity of the biosphere, severely limiting oxygen production.
For the inhabitants of the planet, this absolute darkness will cause severe sensory deprivation, panic, and total spatial disorientation. The darkness will become more than merely an astronomical absence of light: a dense aerosol shield will physically isolate the planet’s surface from solar radiation, while on land and in the World Ocean the last pockets of life will gradually fade away.
20. Walpurgis Night
«When I blot you out (fade away), I will cover the heavens (hide) and make their stars dark (hide them in darkness); I will cover the sun with a cloud, and the moon shall not give its light (will not shine).
All the bright lights of heaven will I make dark over you (that shine, gleam), and put darkness on your land, declares the Lord God» (Ezekiel 32:7–8; the words in parentheses are clarifications from modern translations).
And not Egypt alone: wherever one looks, the whole world will be enveloped in a black shroud, much as the prophet Jonah was swallowed by a great fish for 3 days. As if in a nightmare, the planet, exhausted by cataclysms, will make its rotations not for three, but for 40 days, in complete isolation from sunlight, immersed in extreme impact darkness.
With a sharp decrease in illumination, human vision shifts into the scotopic (rod-mediated) mode, gradually losing color sensitivity and becoming achromatic. In the complete absence of light, the photoreceptors of the retina receive no photon signal, and the visual system perceives the surrounding environment as absolute darkness.
For ancient people, this was not merely the physical absence of a light signal, but a real, tangible effect. "Not knowing that the eye merely reflects light, the ancients believed that eyes were capable of illuminating objects. Therefore, darkness was regarded not simply as the absence of light, but also as a force that suppressed a person’s ability to see" [Ref. 1, p. 582]. They perceived darkness as an active, ominous substance.
Those who survive the Day of the LORD will «look to the earth (look upward, look to the earth), but behold, distress and darkness (trouble and oppression), the gloom of anguish (sorrow and suffering). And they will be thrust into thick darkness» (Isaiah 8:22, 5:30, see also Amos 5:20).
Cast into the blackness of night, blinded by a terrifying storm, people will find themselves dependent on the condition of the trembling raped Earth-victim. She shudders and is illuminated only by flashes of lightning (Job 26:11) and the glow of volcanic eruptions. The afflicted will remain in impenetrable darkness, deafened by thunder above and the roar of the sea abyss below (Psalm 77:17–19), when the abyss raises its waves high (Habakkuk 3:10), flooding almost all the dry land with seawater.
The future darkness was revealed to the apostle John: «The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness» (Revelation 16:10).Apocryphal texts confirm: "darkness and gloom will come, and clothe and envelop the whole world" (Apocalypse of Peter 5:1–5). The navi Yeshaya foresees the theophany at a time of complete absence of light, when «darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples» (Isaiah 60:2).
Therefore, the navi Amos warns those who live in the last days: «Is not the day of the Lord darkness, and not light, and gloom with no brightness in it?» (Amos 5:20; “Thus the Day of the LORD will turn into gloom for you, and not into the long-awaited light. For you it will be impenetrable darkness!” translation [Ref. 24]).
21. Unusual Downpours
For a long time, the inconsolable Earth will weep over her unhappy fate, sending lightning and thunder of curses through the darkness at her tormentors. Red, black, yellow, white tears will pour and pour... For throughout the entire lower atmosphere, the continuous physical process of condensation of vapor on particles of dust, ash, and soot will promote the formation of downpours extraordinary in scale and intensity.
A thick, dark liquid pours down with a deafening roar, as if a black dam in the heavens had burst and extraordinary floodgates of the sky had opened: hot, colored, acidic. Hot – because of the high temperature of the surrounding air and the considerable store of heat in the atmosphere. Precipitation – red, yellow, black, white – due to iron oxides, soot, ash, volcanic ash, and white mineral dust from carbonate rocks. Acidic (pH ≈ 4.0 ... 5.0) – mainly because of oxides of: 1) sulfur; 2) nitrogen.
Toxic sulfur oxides will enter the troposphere primarily through volcanic emissions, products of the combustion of sulfur-containing compounds, and the thermal decomposition of sulfate rocks – anhydrite and gypsum. Nitrogen oxides will form during high-temperature processes: fires, lightning, and thermal explosions, particularly during asteroid impacts.
Some of the sulfur and nitrogen oxides, undergoing further oxidation reactions in the atmosphere involving oxygen and hydroxyl radicals, will form vapors of sulfuric acid H2SO4 and nitric acid HNO3. These vapors and their precursors will condense and dissolve in water droplets and on the surfaces of aerosol particles.
Hot acidic rains will occur, with an initial temperature of more than 50 °C, according to the model estimate. Catastrophic acidification of fresh waters will occur – those that have not yet mixed with seawater, which has flooded almost all the dry land.
Such an acidic, bitter-tasting liquid is lethal when consumed by humans as well as by many animals, plants, and microorganisms. For example, at pH ≈ 4.5, conditions become lethal for many species of fish, amphibians, and aquatic invertebrates.
Acidic precipitation will destroy the leaves on the trees that survive the fire. Moreover, according to the vision of the apostle John: «many people died from the water, because it had been made bitter» (Revelation 8:11).
The air will also become contaminated with toxic sulfur, nitrogen, and carbon compounds, including sulfur oxides (SO2, SO3) and nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and other products of high-temperature reactions and global fires. In the presence of chlorine-containing rocks, chlorine-containing gases and aerosols may also enter the atmosphere, from which hydrochloric acid (HCl) will form. Alongside these, aerosols of sulfuric acid, nitric acid, and other acids will accumulate.
Darkness and a wild, thunderous downpour with hail (Ezekiel 38:22; Isaiah 28:17), "flooding the earth" (Sibylline Oracles 3:690), will continue without interruption for approximately 40 days – according to the author’s calculations, roughly the amount of time that may be required for significant cooling of the troposphere. As the temperature decreases, the water-vapor-saturated air will lose its ability to retain the previous amount of vapor, and its excess will therefore continuously condense.
Given its global character and tragic consequences, the Lord compares this event with the global Flood that occurred nearly 12,000 years ago.
«Just as it was in the days of Noah, so will it be in the days of the Son of Man ... and the flood came and destroyed them all» (Luke 17:26–27). The psalmist describes torrential rainfall: «Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls» (Psalm 42:7; Job 22:11), and describes «deep mire» (Psalm 69:2).
In the last days of the existence of this generation, rain will pour down with hail, rivers will overflow widely, hurricane-force winds will blow, and they will crash down upon the houses of the complacent, indifferent to the warnings of Jesus Christ. All the buildings will collapse because they were built on sand, their fall will be great (Matthew 7:27) and accompanied by a terrible roar.
Whoever has ears to hear – let him strike while the iron is hot!
22. Why Will the Heavens Become Copper and the Ground Iron?
After 40 days, the continuous darkness that can be physically felt by touch (Exodus 10:21), the thick darkness (Isaiah 8:22), will dissipate, and the first rays of light will break through to the surface. Yet the air clouded by dust will not become transparent, the deep salt marshes – tiny, and the color of the sky – blue.
After the prolonged rain, new “clouds” will reveal themselves, and for a long time «the sun and the light and the moon and the stars» will be darkened (Ecclesiastes 12:2). They will remain darkened for 3.5 years – a period corresponding to half of the final seven-year period (Daniel 9:27) and approximately consistent with the long persistence of stratospheric aerosols. Day will merge with night, and morning with evening; then you will «rise up at the sound (cry) of a bird» (Ecclesiastes 12:4).
Due to cosmic dust present in the atmosphere, as well as sulfate aerosols, soot, smoke, volcanic tephra, and sea salt lofted into it, solar insolation at the surface may decrease by approximately 1/3, corresponding to the ratio described in the prophecy: «...a third of the day might be kept from shining, and likewise a third of the night» (Revelation 8:12; compare Jeremiah 4:23).
Such a gloomy fragment of the eschatological picture was recorded by Zechariah, as well as by Jeremiah. «I looked on the earth, and behold, it was without form and void ("nothing living remained," translation [Ref. 18]); and to the heavens, and they had no light» (Jeremiah 4:23).
The planet will appear devastated, desolate, black and white; neither the grass destroyed by fire nor the trees will be visible; a third of them will have burned, while the others will be stripped bare, broken, fallen, and torn out by the roots; and the arable land will be flooded with saltwater and acidic water. Moreover, the familiar daylight will disappear (verse 23b).
«On that day there shall be no light … neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be (will appear) light» (Zechariah 14:6–7; "toward evening it will become light," translation CUV’23). Indeed, on Yom Yahweh (verse 1), there will be something in between – neither day nor night.
This twilight effect will arise from a radical change in the optical properties of the atmosphere. Instead of Rayleigh scattering, which makes the sky blue, light scattering by aerosol particles according to the Mie mechanism (Mie scattering) will predominate in the dust-laden air.
The short-wave, particularly blue, part of the solar spectrum will be more strongly scattered and partially absorbed by aerosols, whereas long-wave radiation will penetrate relatively better to the surface. The sky will acquire a metallic copper hue, and toward evening – a crimson hue [Ref. 12].
Below, the hard, salt-laden, dirty dry land will be covered with ash, soot, meteorite fragments, and iron-bearing spherulites from impact and volcanic ejecta. The prophecy will be fulfilled: «And the heavens over your head shall be bronze (copper), and the earth under you shall be iron» (Deuteronomy 28:23). In ancient times, iron was an embodiment of hardness [Ref. 3], and people learned to work meteoritic iron long before the development of iron metallurgy, using various methods of mechanical processing [Ref. 15, p. 25].
The earth will also become "iron" through a combination of geochemical processes: finely dispersed volcanic ash and impact dust will mix with water, acidic precipitation, salts, and fragments of carbonate and silicate rocks; dissolution, hydration, oxidation of iron, precipitation of newly formed minerals, and the pozzolanic reaction will take place – the interaction of reactive silica with calcium hydroxides and other calcium-containing phases in the presence of water.
Mudflows (lahars) and ash layers will gradually compact and cement, forming a thick, low-permeability stony-mineral crust. Under the "copper" sky, this concrete-like ground will become "iron" (Deuteronomy 28:23), rendering it unsuitable for agriculture.
23. Catastrophic Climate Change
The prophet Zechariah foresees the Day of the LORD as a time of large-scale and catastrophic changes in meteorological conditions (Zechariah 14:6–7). The authors of [Ref. 17] make the same claim: "during the years of the great tribulation, drastic climate changes will occur on the earth" (p. 569).The gaseous and aerosol composition of the atmosphere will change radically. Acid precipitation, the influx of acidic impact products, and the dissolution of carbon dioxide will lead to severe acidification of the upper layers of the pelagic zone.
The directions and parameters of the major atmospheric and oceanic circulations will become destabilized, including atmospheric jet streams, the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), of which the Gulf Stream is a part, and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.
The predicted eschatological darkness will descend upon the planet: «On that day there shall be no light» (Zechariah 14:6). In the Masoretic Text, this passage records the state as: "there shall be no light; cold and frost,” while textual variants render it as "there will be cold and a thickening of the air," translation [Ref. 16]. The familiar insolation will disappear for a long time, giving way to a twilight state – «neither day nor night» (Zechariah 14:7).
The cause of this global blackout will be continuous dust and sandstorms from regional desert expanses, as well as an extreme concentration of stratospheric aerosols, primarily sulfate aerosols formed from SO2 and containing sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Sulfate fog in the stratosphere reflects and scatters solar radiation extremely effectively, remaining suspended for significantly longer than large particles of dust and volcanic ash.
According to the author’s estimates, after the initial short-term warming of the atmosphere, the near-surface air temperature will rapidly fall compared with the norm before the impact cataclysm: by 30 °C ... 40 °C in the Northern Hemisphere and by 15 °C ... 20 °C in the Southern Hemisphere. The surface of the World Ocean will cool by 5 °C ... 10 °C.
The warning will be fully realized: "The wise will flee from the northern lands before the judgment comes upon them (Zechariah 2:6)"[Ref. 1, p. 1051], for wherever extreme cold prevails, famine will inevitably follow.
According to the proposed model, three severe, anomalously long "asteroid winters" can be expected on the planet, collectively covering most of the 3.5-year period of the Great Tribulation; the second will be the most critical. “Three asteroid winters” is not a category borrowed from the scientific literature, but a term and an element of the author’s model. The approximate duration of these cold periods is linked to biblical chronology and at the same time has a physical analogy with the multiyear impact cooling known from models of the Chicxulub impact.
In some continental regions, air temperatures may drop to –50 °C and below, while soil freezing may extend to a very considerable depth. Areas that had previously never been covered by ice, particularly along the coastal zones of North America and Europe, will become covered with sea ice. The area of the ice cover that exists today, particularly in frozen bays, will increase severalfold, especially in Canada.
Frozen water may appear even within the tropics; at the equator, prolonged cooling will set in, accompanied by anomalous pinkish acidic snow, colored by finely dispersed iron oxides and iron-bearing dust from deserts. Over a large part of Europe, a thick snow and ice cover may form. Nevertheless, for those who survive in underground shelters, “hardship and famine will drive them out into the cold."
Global cooling, potentially extending to glaciation of the surfaces of many continents, will be counteracted by the opposite process – the gradual increase in temperature of the lower atmosphere due to an intensification of the greenhouse effect. As the aerosol shield is destroyed, the effects of the accumulation of enormous quantities of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4, H2O) released during impacts and the associated shock and thermal processes, global fires, and volcanism will begin to manifest themselves in the atmosphere.
The power of the solar radiation flux at the top of the atmosphere is approximately 1.8 × 10¹⁷ W, with a solar irradiance of about 1361 W/m²; the globally averaged incoming solar energy is about 340 W/m² (or ≈ 1.22 MJ/h·m²).
When the global aerosol screen finally dissipates and short-wave solar radiation once again reaches the Earth’s surface, its rapid warming will begin. This process will also be aided by the high concentration of greenhouse gases accumulated during fires, volcanism, and the decomposition of methane hydrates.
Greenhouse gases will absorb part of the Earth’s infrared radiation and reduce the effective outflow of heat into space. In the proposed model, these factors, after approximately 3.5 years, may transform the asteroid winter into an asteroid summer—a phase of global thermal overheating.
24. Climate-Active Atmospheric Gases
Water vapor and the aforementioned oxides, formed as a result of large-scale fires, impact explosions, and volcanic eruptions, will trap the Earth’s long-wave infrared radiation. Over a 100-year time horizon, the global warming potential of methane was previously estimated at approximately 23 times that of CO2; current estimates give approximately 27–30 times.
Significant amounts of methane and carbon dioxide may also be released as a result of the thermal decomposition and degassing of gas hydrates in the bottom sediments of the World Ocean and permafrost soils, as well as from wetland ecosystems and carbonate rocks. They will absorb the Earth’s long-wave infrared radiation, reducing its effective thermal radiation into space.
Ozone molecules (O3) will form, among other processes, under the influence of high-voltage lightning discharges in an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Ozone, like the other aforementioned gases, also absorbs a considerable portion of short-wave ultraviolet radiation quite intensively.
Conversely, approximately 93–95% of all solar radiation energy reaching the top of the Earth’s atmosphere falls within the visible and near-infrared ranges, with wavelengths from 0.4 μm to 2.5 μm. The Earth’s surface and atmosphere, in turn, emit thermal energy predominantly in the mid- and far-infrared ranges, at wavelengths of approximately 4–15 μm and 15–100+ μm, respectively.
Therefore, the atmosphere will become a kind of thermal insulation layer that will reduce heat loss into space. At the same time, greenhouse gases will reduce the effective outflow of the Earth’s infrared thermal radiation into space, while sulfate aerosols will primarily weaken the incoming solar energy reaching its surface.
The extreme cooling of the first years after the catastrophe will be followed by gradual global warming, which will become particularly noticeable in regions that, after the model-predicted shift of the geographic poles, will find themselves closer to the new tropical belts.
Therefore, the atmosphere will become a kind of thermal insulation layer that will reduce heat loss into space. Greenhouse gases will reduce the effective outflow of the Earth’s infrared thermal radiation into space, while sulfate aerosols will primarily weaken the incoming solar energy reaching its surface.
The extreme cooling of the first years after the catastrophe will be followed by gradual global warming, which will become particularly noticeable in regions that, after the model-predicted shift of the geographic poles, will find themselves closer to the new tropical belts.
In the proposed model, the geographic poles of the Earth will shift by approximately 15° [Ref. 12], and accordingly, the notional lines of the equator, polar circles, and tropics will also shift. This will lead to a significant restructuring of the seasonal and latitudinal distribution of temperature. Global warming will set in, becoming particularly noticeable in northern Eurasia, southern South America, and parts of Antarctica.
In the northern part of the Eastern Hemisphere and in the south of the Western Hemisphere, winters will become milder and shorter, while summers will become hotter and longer. Conversely, in the new subpolar regions, winters will become much colder, particularly in parts of Canada (if the North Pole shifts into the waters of Baffin Bay), Greenland, and the northeastern United States. It will also become colder in southern Australia, toward which the South Pole will shift.
By contrast, the average air temperature in many other regions, according to the author’s estimates, will rise by 10 °C ... 15 °C or more compared with the current norm. Vegetation that survives the fires will dry out as a result of prolonged drought, which in many regions may be caused by a sharp change in the precipitation regime. The climate on the planet will become significantly warmer, but the distribution of this warmth will be highly uneven.
25. Why Will the Heavens Become Iron and the Ground Copper?
The low transparency of the atmosphere, that is, the "global dimming" (Fig. 6), caused by a high concentration of dust, smoke, soot, ash, and other aerosols, will significantly reduce the intensity of evaporation from the surface of the World Ocean.
During a significant part of the 3.5-year period, the natural water cycle will be severely disrupted; the cold land surface will suffer from severe drought.Severe drought will be accompanied by prolonged, continuous fallout of the finest particles from the atmosphere, including dense ashfalls that may continue for 6 months (and longer). As recorded in Holy Scripture:
«The Lord will make the rain of your land powder. From heaven dust (dust, sand) shall come down on you ("until you suffocate"), until you are destroyed» (Deuteronomy 28:24; literally, "the Lord will turn the rain of your land into dust and powder," translation [Ref. 18]).
The unique precipitation will also contain microparticles of meteoritic material and pulverized impact rocks, colored rust-red by iron oxides (Fe2O3). This copper-colored dust, red desert dust, volcanic ash, and sea salt will cover the soil surface and the remains of vegetation, completely destroying what people will attempt to sow (Deuteronomy 28:42).
There are no plants to provide shade from the scorching sun, nor wood to provide warmth on a frosty night. There is no rain, only ash falling continuously on those who survived the natural disasters and wander in the semidarkness.
Aerosols are disperse systems in which fine solid or liquid particles are suspended in a gaseous medium. Their properties and lifetime depend on particle size, altitude, atmospheric circulation, humidity, and the mechanisms of coagulation and deposition. The average lifetime of tropospheric aerosols usually ranges from several days to several weeks, whereas stratospheric aerosols following major eruptions or emissions may persist from many months to several years.
As the large aggregates (clusters) coagulate and settle and the concentration of suspended particles decreases, the sky will gradually lose its metallic copper color. Its hue will change depending on the composition and concentration of aerosols, and after the atmosphere has undergone substantial self-cleaning, Rayleigh scattering will once again give the sky its natural blue color.
A pale-yellow, cloudless, scorching vault overhead, filled with finely dispersed iron-bearing mineral dust and yielding not a single drop of rain, and a bare, copper-colored dry land below—such will be the fate of those who destroyed the planet. They will pass through fire, water, and copper pipes. Thus the Old Testament prophecy will be fulfilled:
«i will break the pride (arrogance) of your power, and I will make your heavens like iron (there will be no rain) and your earth like bronze (dry and hard)» (Leviticus 26:19, parenthetical translation [Ref. 24]).
Thus, the warning in Deuteronomy 28:23 (see §22) does not contradict the prophecy in Leviticus 26:19 in §25 in the slightest, as it may seem at first glance.
In the author’s proposed model, these prophetic verses can be correlated with different dynamic stages of the Great Tribulation. The initial phase, "asteroid winter," is characterized by a copper-colored sky caused by sulfates and iron-saturated ground that is frozen. The subsequent phase, "asteroid summer," is characterized by an iron-colored sky caused by airborne dust and dry, scorched ground covered with copper-colored dust.
26. The Face of Creation Will Become Unrecognizable
"Although the earth is not destroyed, such changes will take place on it that it will become simply unrecognizable. Mountains will be moved from their places, and some will disappear altogether; others will appear, and still others will change shape. New islands will appear, while others will disappear. All this will be accompanied by terrifying volcanic eruptions" [Ref. 19, p. 379].
The mega-, macro-, meso-, and microrelief of the devastated land, ocean and sea floors, coastlines, and islands will change dramatically. On all continents, the regional geomorphology of the terrain will be transformed, and the modern appearance of many landscapes will be lost. The prophet Yeshaya shares a fragment of an eschatological vision (Isaiah 1:1), particularly of the new Eretz Yisrael, understandably expressed in pre-scientific language.
«Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places (uneven paths shall be made smooth) a plain» (Isaiah 40:4; in the Masoretic Text, "Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the steep places shall become a plain and the mountain range a valley"; see also Micah 1:4).
Thus, the steep places have become a plain (Zechariah 14:10), for the mountains and hills have been flattened, «It is changed like clay under the seal» (Job 38:14). A great global megathrust earthquake will destroy the deserted cities (Isaiah 24:10; Zephaniah 3:6; Revelation 16:19), lower the mountains (Ezekiel 38:20; Habakkuk 3:6; Revelation 16:20), and move the islands from their places (Revelation 6:14; 16:20).
The former springs, lakes, and rivers will disappear; instead, new aquatic-landscape systems will emerge (Isaiah 19:5–7; 41:18; 42:15; Ezekiel 30:12; Psalm 107:33–35). The planet will be covered with deep depressions, craters, and extensive tectonic faults; it will undergo devastation (Isaiah 24:17–22; 51:6; Jeremiah 25:32–38), and its vegetation cover will burn up (Revelation 8:7; Joel 1:19).
These natural disasters will become «a day of distress and anguish, a day of ruin and devastation» (Zephaniah 1:15; “a day of terrible calamities and destructions,” translation [Ref. 18]). On the barren soil, covered with a meter-thick layer of ash and saturated with salt, no grass will grow, while on the deeply frozen ground even many of the trees that survived the fire will perish. It will be impossible to recognize the appearance of the wounded, devastated, and partially submerged dry land.
As foretold by the prophet: «Behold, the Lord will empty the earth and make it desolate (destroying), and he will twist its surface (appearance) and scatter its inhabitants» (Isaiah 24:1–6).
«Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens vanish like smoke (scatter, disperse), the earth will wear out like a garment (fall into decay), and they who dwell in it will die in like manner (perish) …» (Isaiah 51:6; compare Job 9:5–6).
The unprecedented darkness and the "disappearance" of the familiar celestial vault will create extremely unusual conditions for observing celestial bodies; it will be impossible to distinguish one time of day from another – the state of «neither day nor night» will prevail (Zechariah 14:7). "The cessation of the operation of the indicators of time means that incredible cataclysms will occur in nature, which will turn the whole world upside down" [Ref. 15, p. 940].
The state of «neither day nor night» will arise from a reduction in the intensity of direct solar radiation and the scattering of light in the homosphere, densely filled with dust, ash, soot, and sulfate aerosols [Ref. 12]. Across the planet, twilight darkness will prevail during the day (Isaiah 60:2), while at night, conversely, there will be light (Amos 5:8).
In the latter case, complete nighttime darkness may be weakened by the multiple scattering of sunlight in the powerful stratospheric aerosol layer by atmospheric particles, including ice, chlorides, carbonates, sulfates, and so on. Some of the light scattered in the atmosphere over the sunlit part of the planet will also reach the shadowed region on Earth, creating a faint illumination of the night sky.
This effect can be described as diffuse illumination due to “stratospheric aerosol scattering." This high-altitude aerosol shield will redirect part of the sunlight from the illuminated side of the Earth to its shadowed sector.
In addition to the disappearance of the familiar light and the absence of any distinction between day and night, the prophets Zechariah and Joel see neither the sun during the day nor the moon and stars at night (Zechariah 14:6; Joel 3:15).
27. Easier to Bury Than to Feed
As a result of the planet’s abrupt climate change, severe prolonged drought and fierce mass famine (Fig. 7) will engulf the remaining inhabitants. According to the prophecy:
«The fields are destroyed, the ground mourns (“In ashes are the fields, in ash the ground” [Ref. 24]), because the grain is destroyed (grain, crops), the wine dries up (young grapes), the oil languishes (olive tree)» (Joel 1:10 and following).
«The seed shrivels under the clods (of earth; “We sowed grain, but it dried up under the ground. Our plants dried up and died,” translation [Ref. 18]); the storehouses are desolate (barns); the granaries are torn down because the grain has dried up» (Joel 1:17 and following; Deuteronomy 28:48–57).
The surviving population will die in semidarkness from extreme exhaustion of the body (cachexia), including dehydration, hypothermia, injuries, and systemic diseases, without ever seeing the sun, moon, or stars. Death will ride on a horse, pale as the pale yellow-green sky (Revelation 6:8), and behind it will creep widespread famine, cachexia, and merciless epidemics.
Those who destroyed the planet themselves will be afflicted by «then the Lord will bring on you and your offspring extraordinary afflictions, afflictions severe and lasting (constant), and sicknesses grievous (evil) and lasting» (Deuteronomy 28:59–61). John sees severe somatic afflictions: «harmful and painful (horrible, harsh) sores came upon the people» (Revelation 16:2).
Exhausted by malnutrition (Job 18:12; Lamentations 4:9), tormented by extreme temperature fluctuations (Zechariah 14:6; Revelation 16:9), poisoned by toxic bitter water (8:11), buried under dust, powder, and ash instead of heavenly manna (Deuteronomy 28:24), people will go mad with grief and suffer from severe depression (Psalm 38:4–11). They will hide in tectonic fissures of rocks and in burrows (Isaiah 2:19), like reptiles (Micah 7:17).
However, God’s righteous wrath has its limits; otherwise, not a single creature on the planet would survive (Isaiah 57:16). That is why Jesus Christ speaks about the Great Tribulation in this way: «And if the Lord had not cut short the days, no human being would be saved» (Mark 13:20). The Lord Himself will break the yoke, the rod, and the staff of the oppressor, as happened on the night of the defeat of the Midianites by Gideon (Isaiah 9:4; Judges 7:19–21).
"Even in misfortune, there is some good". Three and a half years after the beginning of the cataclysm, atmospheric transparency will begin to recover noticeably due to gravitational sedimentation and wet washout of dust, soot, volcanic ash, sulfates, and other aerosols. Water from the World Ocean will once again evaporate intensively, its vapor will condense into clouds, and life-giving rains will pour down upon the earth, «as before» (Joel 2:23).
The air will finally become completely self-cleaned, as the concentration of stratospheric aerosols decreases significantly already during the first six months of intensive washout [Ref. 13]. Subsequently, the atmosphere will stabilize, the global natural water cycle will gradually recover, and the macroclimate will begin to even out. Arable land will once again become productive, and full-flowing rivers will flow from Jerusalem (Amos 9:13–14; Zechariah 14:8; Joel 4:17–18).
The merciful Creator will restore harmony between the new starry heavens and the new flourishing planet (Isaiah 66:22; Hosea 2:21–22). The moon will shine brightly again, «and the light of the sun will be sevenfold, as the light of seven days» (Isaiah 30:26)—in contrast to its dim glow in the twilight of the mournful days of the Great Tribulation.
All nations will begin to worship the true Son of God. «And the Lord will be king over all the earth. On that day the Lord will be one and his name one» (Zechariah 14:9; Micah 4:6–7; Revelation 11:15).
Whoever has eyes will see, whoever has ears will hear, and whoever looks to Wisdom will understand.
